About ACHPER

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Inc. (ACHPER) is a leading professional association representing over 3,000 professionals working in the fields of health, physical education, human movement studies, sport, recreation, dance and community fitness. It is a member based, not for profit organisation with a highly credible national profile.

The Mission of ACHPER is to promote active and healthy living for all Australians and particularly to support its educators and its members in the study and application of its areas of interest.

ACHPER's Constitution clearly outlines the mission and vision of ACHPER, as well as the rules for governance. A new Constitution was developed by the National Board in 2009 to modernise the governance structure and operations, which is now in effect. A copy of the new Constition can be downloaded below.

ACHPER National works collaboratively with its state and territory branches and kindred bodies to advocate for quality health and physical education programs.

As a service to members and the profession, ACHPER manages the Healthy Lifestyles Bookshop, and publishes two key publications: the Active and Healthy Magazine and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport & Physical Education.

ACHPER is also a leading publisher of quality resource materials to support the health and physical education curriculum frameworks in all states and territories. ACHPER's close links to the education systems and schools provide an ideal context in which to conduct consultancies and professional development activities. Teachers look to ACHPER locally and nationally for support in terms of new curriculum resources.

Recently the National Board reviewed ACHPER’s profile and core business and affirmed that ACHPER’s key roles were to:

  • promote and develop quality professional practice
  • encourage a membership base that is linked to national professional standards for teachers
  • provide support for members through quality professional learning
  • advocate on behalf of the profession
  • support/encourage research
  • contribute to policy and strategy through submissions and services to government
  • provide advice to government, schools and community
  • enter into partnerships with government, kindred and corporate organisations to pursue its goals.
