Leading educator goes into bat for physical education

Professor Emeritus Alan Reid from the University of South Australia today encouraged physical education teachers to strongly engage politically and educationally in promoting the value of their learning area.

These comments were made as part of his presentation of the Fritz Duras Memorial Lecture at the 27th International Conference of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in Adelaide.

Reid argued that the health and physical education profession needed to be on the front foot in order to guarantee a deserved place in the National Curriculum.

He said that health and physical education has become increasingly marginalised and was the first to suffer when more time was demanded for the ‘core’ subjects.

‘This presents a rare opportunity to rethink the place of and approach to physical education in Australian schools’, Reid said.

Professor Reid supported the work of brain scientists who have demonstrated the importance of movement in a child’s education and said that the health and physical education profession needed to include this evidence as a basis for a new rationale.

Sitness vs Fitness

Jean Blaydes Madigan, education expert from Action Based Learning in Texas, USA, today presented compelling evidence to justify the link between regular exercise, brain development and a child’s learning at the opening of the 27th International Conference of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in Adelaide.

Blaydes Madigan said that the chair is the least effective environment for learning and studies show the positive effects of even 2-3 minutes of physical activity will last for 15-20 minutes. Several interventions like this over the school day will have a significant impact on a child’s learning.

Better movers = better learners

Toward health & physical education for new times

Compelling evidence from global researchers has revealed a strong connection between human movement, cognitive (brain) development and enhanced learning. These findings will be presented to over 360 delegates in Adelaide at the 27th International Conference of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation next week.

This evidence strengthens the case for Health and Physical Education (HPE) to be acknowledged as playing a pivitol role in the healthy holistic education of Australian students.
