HPE in the National Curriculum

This week the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) released its first 2010 Communique. The Communiqué refers to advice given to MCEECDYA by Professor Barry McGaw, Chair of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) regarding national curriculum developments.

As a consequence, Ministers agreed that national curriculum development should cover all eight learning areas listed in the Melbourne Declaration and that the curriculum will define the core knowledge, skills and understanding that all students should learn across particular years of schooling.
ACHPER has advocated strongly for this and is delighted with the announcement.

Ministers also agreed to “the prioritisation of Health and Physical Education (HPE) within phase three of the curriculum development plan; the inclusion of HPE as a core learning requirement for all students in each year from K–10; and to maximise within the overall package of required school learning the number of school hours that students participate in quality physical education and sport”.

It is noteworthy that all phases of K–10 curriculum development will be completed by the end of 2012. While the implementation timeline is not yet resolved the Australian Curriculum in English, mathematics, science and history for kindergarten to Year 10 - currently the subject of public consultation – will be phased in from 2011. Substantial implementation will be completed by the end of 2013.
Go to:

If you also go to the ACARA website at www.acara.edu.au, you will notice a number of positions being advertised. One of these positions is for a Senior Project Officer in Health and Physical Education. The formative role of the Senior Project Officer will be to provide expertise in the area, establish consultative networks, manage consultation, the work of written and implementation.

ACHPER has worked hard advocating on your behalf for this inclusion and will continue to be there to provide advice and assistance to ACARA as the process unwinds. We will keep you up to date with announcements and progress through our National ACHPER website and the e-newsletter.

Nominations for the new ACHPER Board

The new ACHPER National governance model will come into effect when elections are held for new Board Members in July 2010. This follows a lengthy period of research and consultation in which the current Board voted for a new structure of a smaller Board of 9 (6 elected and 3 coopted members).

Any ACHPER Member is eligible to stand unlike the current structure whereby branches nominate a representative to the Board. Members who are already holding office on a branch board or are employed by ACHPER at any level are not eligible.

The purpose is to establish an independent National Board, improve the speed of decision-making, and meet more regularly.

Branches will appoint representatives to a National Representative Council that can advise the Board on issues of importance and assist in directions and policies.

Call for nominations will be May 17 for the July election at a meeting in Adelaide. While the new constitution now allows for individuals to be nominated, branches will continue to play a critical role by identifying interest and encouraging it.

There will be a transition period that will ensure a level of continuity and succession from the old to the new Board. Two of the three National Executive members of current board will stay on for the first term of the new Board. Further information and a nomination form will be posted on the ACHPER website.

Asia-Pacific Journal for Health, Sport & Physical Education - Call for manuscripts

Announcement

2010 journal cover.jpg

ACHPER is pleased to announce the introduction of a new Journal. The Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport & Physical Education is replacing the Healthy Lifestyles Journal and is now calling for manuscript submissions. Manuscripts should be approximately 6000 words. Guidelines for authors can be found below.

While the particular focus of the Journal is on the Asia-Pacific region manuscripts from beyond this region are welcome, providing they have relevance to the readership. Emphasis will be given to research-based articles that make reference to other critical work in the field and/or discuss particular issues of practice-focused research within the specific professional fields of health, sport and physical education. Editorial will privilege those articles that explore and provide a depth of understanding of the complex inter-relationship between developing/improving practice through the production of knowledge.

As well as our research focus we also invite manuscripts that engage in critical analysis and discussion of current events relevant to the key defining areas of health, sport and physical education or contributions to workplace-based learning across a wide range of specific institutional/ and community contexts.

A review section will be offered and will feature both book reviews and review essays (usually a maximum 1000 words).

Correspondence about the journal should be directed to the Editor, Dr Chris Hickey chick@deakin.edu.au

ACHPER Moves to E-Publishing in 2010

The Journal and Magazine will be produced in electronic format from Issue 1, 2010.

ACHPER’s National Board has undertaken a significant review of ACHPER’s two National publications for members and subscribers, the Healthy Lifestyles Journal and the Active and Healthy Magazine.

The ACHPER Healthy Lifestyles Journal will be re-launched in 2010 with a new name (Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport and Physical Education) and design offering wider representation throughout the region.

Both the Journal and the Active and Healthy Magazine will move to an electronic format from the first issue of 2010.

ACHPER is committed to finding ways to reduce any negative environmental impact of its practices and seeks to enhance the environment we live in. The Board believes this move to e-publishing is a decision taken in the best interests of members and subscribers. It will also help to minimise membership and subscription fee increases over time.

ACHPER appreciates that this is a significant change to what members and subscribers are used to. However, it is a fact that most contemporary organisations have moved in this direction.

Should you wish to still receive a hard copy we will be pleased to make this available on a cost recovery basis only. For further details please contact Megan Cowper, National Membership Coordinator, on phone 08 8340 3388 or email membership@achper.org.au.
