ACHPER Resources

  • AFEA Kit

The Australian Fitness Education Award (AFEA) is a program of easy to use tests, a motivational system of awards and supporting curriculum ideas. It reflects a health-related philosophy and encourages students to set personal goals by aspiring to criterion-based standards of achievement.

The AFEA is targeted at students aged 9-18 years. ACHPER developed the resource with a view to turning students towards rather than away from physical activity. We aim to reduce comparisons with others, eliminate embarrassment and focus on learning about personal health and fitness.

  • Play 5

ACHPER has released the exciting new ‘Play 5’ resource for use in lower to middle primary schools. Developed by the University of Notre Dame and funded by Telstra the purpose of the resource is to increase physical activity levels through a cross curriculum approach.

The resource promotes the notion of students being involved in 10-15 minute bouts of physical activity, approximately 5 times a day in school and play time. It will include information for teachers, student diaries, equipment, playground markings, activity cards and parent information.

The resource has been very well researched and it is compatible with the Curriculum frameworks and syllabuses of the States and Territories and the National Guidelines for physical activity produced by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
This is an innovative resource full of ideas for the classroom as well as recess and lunch time.

Includes equipment and playing time suggestions for warm-ups, indoor, outdoor and relays, accompanied by fun and helpful illustrations. It reaffirms the importance of daily physical activity.

    Teacher Comments
This book is a must for busy teachers who see physical activity as an important part of a student’s life. Each activity is easy to organise as the equipment is minimal and the instructions are clearly explained. My year 6 students have had fun completing the activities while being re-energised for learning. Valerie, Yr 6 Teacher

This book is wonderful. Lots of fun and interesting activities that really get the kids going. They love fitness lessons and really miss it when it rains. Chris, Yr 5 Teacher

What I like about these activities is that they are really easy to follow and don’t take a lot of time to organise. The children love the variety of games and really push themselves hard. I can see the difference in their work in cloass. They are more focused. Trevor, Yr 4 Teacher

  • Play with Purpose

This resource is to support teachers in the implementation of the game-centred approach to teaching physical education in the primary and middle years of schooling.

The game-centred approach asks the teacher, using key questions, to consider teaching students an understanding of a game, and helping them gain the confidence to transfer the skills across game types. This will lead to enhanced self-concepts and greater levels of sustained involvement in physical activity compared to traditional skill and drill approaches.

  • PEP Fitness Lower Primary

Fitness for adults has been dominated by the 'physical training' model. The training concepts of frequency, intensity, duration and specificity are inappropriate for young children.

Fitness for young children relates more closely to their capacity to engage in active play, which is so important for their overall growth and the development of fundamental motor skills.

Young children do need a healthy level of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility in order to be able to participate fully in activities that will enhance their overall development. However, it is not necessary to design specific exercises. Fitness is achieved through engaging in developmentally appropriate movement exercises rather than training. PEP Fitness activities are organized into five themes:

    • Fundamental Movement Skills and Games
    • Dance
    • Outdoor Education
    • Movement Exploration
    • Talking about Fitness and Physical Activity

All activities allow for maximum participation and thus do not involve lines of children waiting in turn. The activities are simply organised so that little time is wasted giving instructions. Equipment required is simple and inexpensive.
